Which is the easier option than trying to get if off the phone directly. There are utilities that can pry into the backup file. Is the phone backed up to a local drive (Windows, Mac OS)? Backed up to iCloud? Have you wiped this phone of data, or is it still on the phone? I think it depends on what version of iOS is on it.
